Charles Bamforth certainly has a rooting interest in how people perceive beer.
Bamforth directs the brewing program at UC Davis, and he holds the Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professorship of Malting and Brewing Science. He writes books about the subject.

Wikipedia has the answer. Hamm’s employees called the bear Sascha, after the wife of the founder of the company, but the namenever actually was mentioned in commercials:
