Wisconsin’s Beer Hut

Beer HutAbout 15 years ago at an emphemera show (featuring stuff like old maps, movie magazines, brochures, etc.) I came across a postcards featuring the Beer Hunt in Fond du Lac, Wis. (pictured to the right).

Alas, it closed in 1972 and today it’s a mall.

This year it is being memorialized by a Christmas ornament, one in a series from the Soroptimist Club.

“The Beer Hut was like Happy Days — it was the place to be every night,” Jim Sabel, a Fond du Lac resident and City Council member, told the Fond du Lac Reporter.

“They made their own root beer — which was very popular — and gave small mugs of it to kids for free,” said Pam Minsch. “But the Beer Hut also had a large selection of beer — 50 different brands, including 30 imported varieties.”

We’ve got the postcard, we might buy the ornament, but we’d rather have memories of drinking a beer at the Beer Hut in its primer.
