Schell opens modern visitor center

August Schell Brewing attracts 50,000 tourists a year to New Ulm, Minn., and finally has a new visitor center to entertain them.

“We’ve got an elevator for the first time in 146 years. We got a parking lot and we have fancy restrooms,” said president Ted Marti as he showed off new features at the historic brewery (second oldest in the United States).

The construction project hit a few snags (don’t they all?).

A crews were moving dirt and clearing land for a new 45-stall parking lot, “We found a whole ravine full of broken glass.” The ravine was 50 or more feet across and 25 feet deep, filled with bottles discarded by the brewery in its early decades.

And we thought it was a beautiful place to visit before.
