Germans on German beer

Getting ready for the World Cup soccer championships, the German Spiegel Online dives into the country’s national drink, titling the piece “An Obsession Explained.”

Is this really how Germans look at what Spiegel calls “beer types” (also known as styles)?

Consider this description:

Kölsch, confined to Cologne and the surrounding area. Only 24 breweries have permission to make it. It is a top-fermented yet light-colored beer and has a distinct “hoppy” taste. It will seem unusual at first but stick with it; you’ll develop a taste for it after about five. It is usually served in small — Bavarians would say girlie — 0.2 liter glasses.

For each style, Spiegel includes the hangover risk. For bock (or starkbier): “Make sure you don’t have to check out of your hotel before 3:00 p.m. the next day.”

Overall, a nice primer.
