Brewing as community service

Notice how 10 or so years ago that every time a small brewery or brewpub opened it merited a story in the local paper - and then we went years without reading much about craft beer? Eventually craft/specialty-whatever-you-want-to-call-it was declared “dead.”

With craft sales up 7% in 2004 and growing at a similar rate in 2005 it seems somebody turned the switch back on. It’s OK again to feature local breweries in local newspapers. Witness a story in the New Albany Tribune about New Albanian Brewing Co.

My favorite line comes from brewer Jared Williamson:

“It’s almost like a community service.”

Indeed.
