Another Belgian pub for Philadelphia
Don Russell of the Philadelphia Daily News reports that still another Belgian-style bar has opened in Philadelphia. The Black Door (2nd and Bainbridge streets, South Street area) promises a Belgian-heavy beer list of about 50 different bottles and five taps.
It’s hard to believe it was just 10 years ago that Copa Too! in Philly put Kwak on tap. Until Tom Peters, now partner in the venerable Monk’s Cafe, guaranteed he’d sell a shipment of the beer himself you almost never saw a draft Belgian beer, and then it was something from brewing giant Interbrew (now InBev). Russell reports that operators of other Belgian bistros are happy to see the “competition.”
“Hey, the more the merrier,” said Peters. “Philadelphia is Brussels in America.” Eulogy owner Michael Naessens added, “As a Belgian-American I’ve always said if there can be 5,000 Irish bars in Philadelphia, there should be room for at least a dozen Belgians.”
This week’s Joe Sixpack column (registration required) will make you want to be in Philadelphia today for Friday the Firkinteenth at Grey Lodge Pub.
